Budget Friendly Travel

Seeing the world doesn’t require a big budget. It requires knowing where to spend and where to save.

Some of the best trips I’ve taken cost a fraction of what people assume. Here’s how to stretch your travel budget without cutting the experience short.

How to Travel More for Less

  • Travel in shoulder season. — Flights and hotels drop significantly just before or after peak season, often with better weather than the deep off-season.
  • Be flexible with dates and airports. — Shifting your trip by a few days, or flying into a nearby city, can save a substantial amount on flights.
  • Eat where locals eat. — Markets and neighborhood spots are usually cheaper and better than restaurants near major tourist sites.
  • Use city tourism cards. — Many cities offer cards bundling public transit and museum entry, which pay for themselves fast if you plan to sightsee a lot.
  • Book accommodation with a kitchen. — Even cooking breakfast a few times a week adds up over a longer trip.
  • Track fares before you buy. — Set price alerts and book once a fare drops into a reasonable range rather than guessing at the “right” time.
