Travel Planning
A good trip starts long before you leave home. Here’s how to plan without overplanning.
The best itineraries balance structure and flexibility: enough of a plan to make the most of your time, with room to change course once you’re there.
Building Your Itinerary
- Book flights and major lodging first. — These anchor your dates and budget, so lock them in before planning the details around them.
- Pick a home base per region. — Constantly changing hotels eats travel time. Base yourself somewhere central and take day trips instead.
- Leave room in the schedule. — Don’t plan every hour. Some of the best travel moments happen in the unplanned gaps.
- Research opening days and hours. — Museums and attractions often close on specific days, which can wreck a tightly packed schedule if missed.
- Group sights by neighborhood. — Plan your days around geography rather than a wish list, so you’re not crossing the city back and forth.
